The Deaconess tradition began in 19th-Century Europe when Theodor Fliedner of Kaiserswerth, Germany, established the first Deaconess Home and Hospital in 1836. The word deaconess means “one who is devoted to service,” being the feminine gender of the word deacon. The college was originally established as a nurses’ training program associated with the United Church of Christ’s Deaconess Hospital, later renamed Forest Park Hospital.〔()〕 It became Deaconess College of Nursing in the early 1980s. Tenet Healthcare acquired Forest Park and Deaconess College of Nursing in 1997.〔(Deaconess Incarnate Word sells hospitals to Tenet )〕 In March 2005, DeVry Education Group acquired Deaconess.〔(DeVry completes Deaconess College of Nursing buy )〕 A term of the acquisition agreement was that DeVry's use of the Deaconess name would expire as of September 30, 2006. The school was later renamed to Chamberlain College of Nursing. Chamberlain has since evolved from a diploma school of nursing to a college of nursing. It offers undergraduate nursing degree programs at 18 campuses. Chamberlain also offers the following online opportunities: RN-BSN online option, Master of Science in Nursing degree program and Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program.
